About Course

Samanya Abhinaya, discussed by Bharata in Natyasastra, brings together different dimensions of expression while also introducing several frameworks that help performers understand human behaviour, emotion and dramatic situations.

In this course, a senior Bharatanatyam guru introduces the foundations of Samanya Abhinaya and explores concepts including Vachika, Angika and Sattvika Abhinaya, Alankaras, feminine and masculine expressive qualities, the stages of love, and the Ashta Nayika. Through references to dance compositions, Sanskrit drama and even contemporary storytelling, the course demonstrates how these classical classifications can be recognised within performance and narrative.

What will learners take away?

By the end of the course, learners should be able to:

  • Understand the broad concept of Samanya Abhinaya and its relationship with Angika, Vachika and Sattvika Abhinaya.
  • Recognise some of the Alankaras and expressive qualities described by Bharata.
  • Understand how classical theory observes and categorises human behaviour and emotional states.
  • Become familiar with the idea of Dashakama Avastha, or the progression of states associated with love.
  • Identify the eight Ashta Nayika situations and understand how they inform the interpretation of Shringara.
  • Begin connecting these theoretical classifications with Padams, Varnams, Ashtapadis, drama and narrative performance.
